1432 AH: New Year, New Hope

Happy Islamic New Year everyone!

Another year has come and gone. May this upcoming year bring us all great health, increased faith, happiness, ease of hardship, inspiration and success. May this also be a year where justice prevails everywhere!

Just a little background on the Islamic calendar.
There are 12 lunar months- the beginning and endings of which are determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. The months include, Muharram, Safar, Rabbi al-Awwal, Rabbi al-Thani, Jumada al- Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan (the month of fasting), Shawwal, Dhul Qi'dah, Dhul Hijjah. The Islamic calendar is numbered from the year that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his followers emigrated from the city of Mecca to the city of Yathrib (Medinah), to settle the first Muslim community. This was known as the Hijrah, hence the AH representing the years After Hijrah.

While I am not a believer in setting firm 'new year' resolutions, I believe there is always room to look to the future for self-improvement. There's no harm writing them down, either :-) And now, some verses from the Qur'an to express the focus of my new year's resolutions...

And be true to every promise- for, verily you will be called to account for every promise which you have made.  -Al-Isra 17: 34

Never let your enmity for anyone lead you into the sin of deviating from justice. Always be just: that is closest to being God-fearing.  -Al-Ma’idah, 5:8

Your Lord has decreed that you shall serve none but Him, and do good to your parents. Should one or both of them reach old age with you, never say ‘Ugh’ to them, nor scold either of them; but speak to them kindly and respectfully, spread over them the wings of humility and mercy, and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them, as they raised me up when I was little.  -Al-Isra, 17: 23- 24

Guard your prayer, (especially) the middle prayer and stand up with true devotion to Allah.  -Al-Baqarah, 2: 238

And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is). -Al-Baqarah, 2: 42

By no means shall you attain to righteousness until you spend (benevolently) out of what you love; and whatever thing you spend, Allah surely knows it.-Aal-E-Imran, 3: 92

And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into. Al-Isra, 17: 36
