The Greatest Love (Kdrama): My Thoughts

Airing for 16 episodes this past May and June, The Greatest Love turned out to to be an unexpected delight! I always feel lucky every time we stumble upon an interesting drama! I had tested out the first episode with my siblings and didn't feel the right vibe and subsequently discontinued watching it. My younger sister continued with it and informed us that the show had gotten very interesting! And the rest is history, really :-)

Here's a brief synopsis from wikiaddicts:
Ae Jung was once the most popular member of girl band The National Treasure Girls. However 10 years ago the band broke up and she received most of the blame. Despite her warm personality her career has suffered ever since and she now spends her time fighting for air time on variety shows. Dokko Jin is a top movie star at the height of his career. The two meet and become involved in each other's careers. Yoon Pil Joo is a doctor of oriental medicine who has no interest in the entertainment industry but agrees to make a dating show. Dokko Jin helps get Ae Jung a role on a new reality show called Couple Making. Pil Joo is the bachelor being set up on Couple Making. Both men fall for Ae Jung both off and on the screen.

If you've read my previous Kdrama reviews, you know that I've always been cautious about entertainment-industry based dramas! I think this stance only applies to poorly executed ones though, because Greatest Love stands apart.

I'm drawn to unique characters- I enjoy seeing a personality, style or aesthetic that I haven't seen before and lead character Dok Go Jin, played by Cha Seung-Won definitely falls into this category. He's odd, comical and cute all at once! He brings a lot of energy to the story. And I think if not for him, his uber greasy face or weird laugh, this drama would have fallen flat.

With two 'older' leads, this drama came off more like an adult romance in the sense that the story is a slight departure from other dramas that tell stories of 'young' love. Dok Go Jin and Ae Jung find each other a little later in life and that impacts the story quite a bit. So that what you tend to find endearing and romantic are more linked with family, adult situations, etc. If that makes sense.

I have to say, there were some moments where Ae Jung- didn't quite respond to situations the way you'd expect. Like most Kdramas- there were some WTF moments, but very few of them.

I don't have much more to add, because it has been months since I've seen this drama! Lesson learned: Reviewing should be done within a week of completing the drama! Unfortunately, I lost my Greatest Love episodes when my PC crashed, so not only am I unable to refresh my memory, I am unable to provide any screenshots until I can recover the hard drive! In its place, take a look at this fun trailer.

If you're searching for a solid drama and don't want to be disappointed, dive in to The Greatest Love. Funny and sweet, this love story will indeed charm you!
